However, when the time came for the Men of the Mountain to fulfill their allegiance to Gondor, they did not show for battle. Isildur cursed them vowing to never let them rest until they fulfill their oaths to Gondor and its king. As each man perished their spirit was not allowed to rest and they were doomed to walk the earth until they honored their oath.

This was especially affective when another Palantir was close by. The two Palantirs could act as a two way communication device and allow their owners to communicate visually as well as with speech. They were a very efficient communication device in Middle-earth.
4. Sauron was originally a Maia of Aule's people and was easily corrupted by Melkor and became his most trusted lieutenant. In the Wars of Beleriand, Sauron was the most feared of Morgoth's servants, but after the War of Wrath and the expulsion of the first Dark Lord, Sauron rose to become the greatest enemy of Elves and Men in the Second and Third Ages.
For Sauron's greatest passion was to finish what is master Melkor had started, to become Master of Middle-earth. Sauron was one of the mightiest if not the mightiest of the Maiar, and during the first beginnings of time served Aule the Smith. Sauron became a master craftsman like his mentor Aule. He took the forging and making knowledge from Aule and eventually made use of it many thousands of years later when he built the Barad-dur and forged the One Ring to become the next great Dark Lord of Middle-earth.
5. The Balrogs were originally created as Maiars, beings that were created from the same blood line as Sauron. They were primordial spirits of fire that had allied themselves with Melkor in ancient times, and became the most feared of his servants, especially during the Wars of Beleriand in the First Age. The Balrogs were human-like in their physical appearance and had fire streaming from their mortal like features, and were cloaked in dark shadows which gave them an ominous figure of fear.
They carried whips of flame and induced great terror in all creatures, including man as well as beast that came in contact with them. In the War of Wrath, Morgoth was assailed by the forces of the Valar. Most of the Balrogs were destroyed in the War of Wrath, but a small number of them escaped over the Blue Mountains and hid in Middle-earth for thousands of years. Durin's Bane, was the Balrog creature that drove the Dwarves from Moria, and who survived the War of Wrath.
